To mark the 41st anniversary of David Moss’s groundbreaking Dense Band LP, Yatak Records proudly presents a newly remastered edition of the original 1985 Moers Music release. Blending experimental sound, improvisation, and bold songwriting, the album brought together some of the era’s most adventurous musicians, including Fred Frith, Arto Lindsay, John Zorn, Christian Marclay, Wayne Horvitz, Tom Cora, and Tenko. Named one of the Top Ten Albums of 1985 by The New York Times critic Jon Pareles, Dense Band now returns with a remaster that reveals its remarkable sonic detail and energy. The album grew out of New York’s downtown scene in 1984, where Moss envisioned a band that combined grooves with the freedom of improvisation – a noise band you could dance to. To realize that vision, he enlisted Fred Frith as producer, bassist, and guitarist. “That was one of the best decisions of my musical life,” Moss recalls. Recorded at Brooklyn’s legendary B.C. Studio, the sessions fused spontaneous performance with inventive studio techniques, resulting in songs that were rhythmic, unpredictable, and strikingly original. Yatak Records is also reissuing Moss’s 1984 LP Full House, a collection of short, uncompromising duets capturing the raw spirit of New York’s experimental music scene and points directly toward the more song-driven approach of Dense Band. “These records aren’t just historical artifacts,” says Yatak Records director Ali N. Askin. “They’re alive. They still challenge, inspire, and move people.” Beautifully remastered, Dense Band and Full House offer a fresh opportunity to rediscover two landmark recordings of New York’s experimental music scene.
- Newly remastered re-release of 2 timeless classic albums.
- Stellar line-up with legendary artists including Fred Frith, John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Arto Lindsay and many more.
- Capturing the vibrant atmosphere of the improvising Avant-Garde scene in New York City in the mid-80ies.
- Amazing mixtures of jazz, art-rock, experimental, avant-funk, hip-hop, No Wave.
- Dense Band named one of New York Times’ top ten records of 1985 by Jon Pareles.
- Original cover art and beautiful colored vinyl editions.
“But it’s the cohesion of the entire package that makes this set work as well as it does.”
Brian Olewnick (All Music)
“Somewhere between “Dense” and “Dance” unfolds the album’s musical world, with “dense” serving as shorthand for its unique blend of intricate polyrhythms, No Wave instrumentation, and ecstatic vocal eruptions.”

“David Moss can crumple a piece of paper and its music.”

“On Code & Melody (arbitrary) they tell a wondrous (in the literal sense of the word) story to equally wondrous (in the literal sense of the word) electro-clicker and dark-dubby bass drum sounds (especially in the last track: again in the literal sense of the word). “It’s the galaxy is calling, like a mantra!” Unexcitingly exciting”!
